John is the founder of Cardiff Personal Training Studio and has been personal training since 2000. Having worked in 5* hotel gyms and large commercial gyms he always wanted to offer a facility that would allow him, and other trainers, to be able to provide a better service than can be given in busy gyms. He opened the Cardiff PT Studio in 2010 and relocated in 2017. Seeing people he trains get results is what motivates him, and during the years of personal training he has helped 100s of people with various aims: weight loss, gaining muscle, athletic performance, general well-being, and a variety of medical conditions. His biggest achievement as a personal trainer was helping Matt Davies lose 10 stone!

When and why did you start working in the fitness industry?
I started working in the fitness industry in 2000. I had always been passionate about fitness from playing all sports for fun, to strength and conditioning specifically for rugby. From fitness being part of my life I started working in a health club and started to pass on my passion as a gym instructor, personal trainer, gym manager, personal trainer coordinator, before I took on a number of roles with REPs (REPs was the predecessor to CIMSPA). I have always personal trained people alongside my various roles and my passion is still seeing people improve their fitness and achieving their aims.
What are your specialities and preferred methods?
I believe in a holistic approach to fitness – looking at everything: exercise, diet, rest, and enjoying yourself! I believe in balancing lifestyle, with planning and moderation being the key to achieving the balance. I enjoy and appreciate all forms of exercise but strongly believe that intensity is the key to achieving results. Weight and resistance training is also essential to changing metabolisms – but I’m not talking about bicep curls, I’m talking whole body movements that will get lots of muscles working!
